AMD is reportedly gearing up to unveil an enhanced version of its 'Granite Ridge' Ryzen 9000 X3D series, featuring two new processors designed to cater to high-performance gamers and content creators. Among these, a new SKU type has emerged, denoted by the 'X3D2' suffix. Leaks indicate the introduction of a flagship model, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2, boasting 16 cores and 32 threads. This chip is said to incorporate 3D V-Cache technology on both chiplets, resulting in a substantial 192 MB of L3 cache. It operates at a base frequency of 4.30 GHz, with a boost clock reaching approximately 5.6 GHz, and has a TDP of around 200 W. The 9950X3D2's new naming convention suggests a slight trade-off in peak boost speeds (-100 MHz) compared to the single-stack X3D Ryzen 9 9950X3D model, but it offers a significantly larger cache capacity. This combination could be ideal for cache-intensive tasks and specific gaming scenarios. The expanded cache and increased thermal headroom may require system builders to pay closer attention to cooling and VRM design, potentially influencing AMD's pricing strategy or current MSRPs. A companion model, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D, is expected to follow a similar design with eight cores, 96 MB of L3 cache, and a boost clock of 5.6 GHz, all within a 120 W power envelope. The 9850X3D appears as a refined, higher-clocked (+400 MHz) version of the existing 8-core Ryzen 7 9800X3D models, providing enhanced single-thread performance, a key factor for gamers, while maintaining a relatively modest TDP. Both processors are linked to AMD's next-generation V-Cache technology, which promises improved thermal performance and overclocking capabilities. These advancements could explain the development of dual-cache retail SKUs. However, these details remain unconfirmed and should be considered preliminary. If accurate, AMD's strategy would maintain a competitive edge over Intel's upcoming desktop refresh by emphasizing cache-driven performance, a feature Intel's 'Arrow Lake Refresh' lacks until 'Nova Lake'.
