Delhi's air pollution crisis deepens as the city's residents struggle to breathe.
A blanket of smog enveloped Delhi on Saturday, with the air quality plummeting to alarming levels. The city's Air Quality Index (AQI) readings paint a dire picture, with many areas entering the 'severe' zone and others teetering on the edge. The situation has become so severe that it's affecting the daily lives of residents, who are now grappling with health issues.
The temperature dropped to a chilly 11 degrees Celsius, and the AQI levels rose throughout the day, reaching a concerning 361 by 4 pm. This is one of the worst readings Delhi has seen this season, with the previous low being 371 on October 31. The air pollution has caused a range of health problems, including burning eyes, sore throats, and itchy noses, making it difficult for people to go about their daily routines.
But here's where it gets controversial. While the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) claims that the air quality is better compared to the same period last year, residents are experiencing the harsh reality on the ground. By late afternoon, neighborhoods like Nehru Nagar, Vivek Vihar, and Wazirpur had joined the list of areas with severe air quality. And this is the part most people miss: the government's response.
The DPCC has urged residents to refrain from burning biomass and wood, especially as the colder weather sets in. Large residential communities are being encouraged to switch from coal or wood-fired heaters to electric ones. Construction sites, a significant source of dust and pollution, have been instructed to install and use anti-smog guns, especially for taller buildings. These measures, along with staggered office hours, are part of the government's efforts to mitigate the crisis.
However, some residents feel that more needs to be done. In Noida, a city neighboring Delhi, the AQI rose to 354, and residents have been forced to abandon their morning walks, jogging, and cycling routines. The air pollution has made outdoor activities unbearable. Similar stories emerge from Ghaziabad and Greater Noida, where air quality has deteriorated significantly.
The question remains: Are the government's efforts enough? With the AQI levels reaching severe levels, some argue that stricter measures should be implemented sooner rather than later. The Graded Response Action Plan stage-III, which includes more restrictive actions, is yet to be enforced, leaving many wondering if the current measures are sufficient. As the city battles its worst air pollution levels, the debate over the effectiveness of the government's response continues, and residents eagerly await a breath of fresh air.
