Justice Haynes Injury Update: Michigan RB Likely Out for Ohio State Game (2025)

A tough blow has hit Michigan football — and the timing couldn’t be worse. Their star running back, Justice Haynes, is now expected to miss the rest of the regular season, including the high-stakes showdown against Ohio State on November 29. But here’s where things get confusing… and a little controversial.

Haynes had been the Wolverines’ top rusher before a foot injury sidelined him during the Michigan State matchup. Head coach Sherrone Moore initially described his status as “week to week,” leaving room for cautious optimism. Meanwhile, Jordan Marshall stepped up as the primary back for the last two games — until he, too, left Saturday’s game against Northwestern with a shoulder issue. Thankfully, post-game X-rays came back negative, offering a small sigh of relief.

Then came the moment that stirred up debate. During FOX’s broadcast of the Northwestern game, announcer Gus Johnson stated that Haynes was “done for the season.” According to Johnson, Haynes had undergone foot surgery, and although there had been hope for a late-season comeback — especially for the rivalry game against Ohio State — that window appeared to close.

When asked about Johnson’s claim, Moore didn’t fully agree. “I don’t think he’ll be… we’ll see as the doctors go,” he said during his Monday press conference. “But as far as done for the year, I wouldn’t put him in that category.” A statement that only added another layer of uncertainty.

However, when pressed specifically about Haynes’ availability for the rest of the regular season — which Michigan must finish strong to keep its College Football Playoff hopes alive — Moore finally acknowledged: “Yeah, probably.” In other words, yes… Haynes is likely out for the final two games.

Before the injury, Haynes had put up an impressive 857 rushing yards on 121 carries, scoring 10 touchdowns. He’d also been banged up earlier in the season, missing the second half of the USC game with what looked like a rib injury.

As for Marshall, Moore repeated on Monday what he had said immediately after Saturday’s close 24–22 win over the Wildcats: X-rays were negative, but his status for the upcoming Maryland matchup is still uncertain. Moore kept things open-ended: “I feel good about where he’s at, but we’ll see. We’ll take it day by day.”

When asked whether Marshall could return in time for the Ohio State game, Moore sounded more hopeful: “Pretty confident… but we’ll see.” Marshall has racked up 871 yards on 143 carries and also scored 10 touchdowns this season. Bryson Kuzdzal filled in when Marshall left the field on Saturday, finishing with 53 yards on 15 carries.

And this is where most people miss the bigger picture: Michigan’s playoff chances may hinge on how quickly their running back room recovers — or whether depth players can rise to the occasion under immense pressure.

So here’s the real question:

Do you think Michigan can survive these final games without Justice Haynes? And does Sherrone Moore’s cautious wording give you confidence — or concern?

Drop your take in the comments. Is Michigan still playoff material, or is this the turning point no one wanted to see?
